What is Dry Ice Blasting?

Dry ice blasting, also known as dry ice cleaning, is a unique non-abrasive blasting technique used to clean surfaces. It involves propelling solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) at supersonic speeds through a pressurized air stream onto the targeted surface. The process, however, is far from simple, as it requires sophisticated technology and specialized equipment.

Unlike traditional abrasive blasting methods such as sand blasting, bead blasting, or soda blasting, dry ice blasting employs a soft and less dense media. When the dry ice pellets hit the surface, they sublimate instantly, imparting minimal kinetic energy and causing minimal abrasion. The sublimation process absorbs considerable heat from the surface, leading to shear stresses due to thermal shock. Additionally, the dry ice expands to 600 times its original size upon impact, generating microscopic shock waves that aid in removing contaminants. After the process, there are no residual water, moisture, or chemicals left behind, only the blasted-off contaminants, making cleanup a breeze.

Our equipment offers the flexibility to either shave dry ice (snow-like) or propel rice-sized pellets, a feature not commonly found in many machines. Having the option to use both methods is essential because different cleaning tasks require different approaches. Delicate cleaning tasks yield better results with shaved dry ice, as it can access tight spaces with ease. On the other hand, rougher and more aggressive cleaning benefits from using pellets to break up stubborn contaminants. Sometimes, a combination of both methods may be needed for a single cleaning job. Additionally, our equipment is capable of delivering high-pressure streams, up to 300 PSI, when necessary, setting it apart from other machines that may fall short in this aspect.

In addition to having the right machinery, selecting the appropriate hoses and nozzles is crucial. The development of nozzle technology requires significant investment in research and innovation. A knowledgeable company that understands when and how to use different nozzle types can make a significant difference in the cleaning process. At our company, we prioritize investing in advanced equipment and well-trained employees to ensure that our customers receive the best possible value for their investment in our services.

How Does Dry Ice Blasting Work?

KINETIC ENERGY

Using Dry Ice particles is an effective way to eliminate surface contamination without causing any damage or alteration to most hard surfaces.

THERMAL SHOCK

There is a rapid freeze and thaw of the both the particle and the surface which pops the contamination off.

RAPID EXPANSION

Dry Ice expands over 800 times when it hits the surface and sublimates removing contaminants on contact.
